My favorite artwork of the semester is simply called Self Portrait. This painting is my favorite because it looks the most realistic and I learned the most from it. I had experimented with layering in different colors and blending different colors. The artwork that I would like to re-do is the one titled "Crow Wing Mansion,"because the flowers in the artwork do not look right. I am still quite proud of the artwork and will continue to experiment with impressionist landscapes. With both of these artworks, I experimented with techniques I will likely use outside of art class. The use of layering, Impressionism, stencils, and blending are some of these. One thing I wish I could have done is done an artwork to the theme of taking a stand.

This artwork has a self portrait. I have painted myself looking directly at the viewer with a turquoise athletic shirt. The background is green, and I am wearing a red baseball hat that says "Enjoy Capitalism" To create this artwork I had layered complimentary colors to make them stand out and be solid. I also made sure to add a layer of red behind all of the sin to make it look more fleshy and alive. I also wanted to use a split complementary scheme, using the red-green and teal-peach color combination to made the colors pop. In order to make the red darker, I mixed in brown rather than black and I think that that makes the darkness effect more real. For the logos, I decided to create a stencil and spray it onto the the artwork, which I think worked out very well for the artwork. With this artwork, I wanted the big idea behind it to be similar to Frida Kahlo's portraits, and so I used subtle hints to reveal bits of my personality in the painting. The athletic shirt shows that I am a runner, and that the picture I used for reference was at a race I was doing. The background was inspired by the reference photo as well, as there was Minnesota wilderness in the background. The "Enjoy Capitalism" hat hints to my political leanings, which are conservative. I have especially been interested in politics this political season, and someday i'm considering being a diplomate. I am very proud of this artwork. If there is something I would change, I would want to mix up the color scheme to something more interesting. I am envisioning an artwork potentially about my German identity, or about my love of Spanish. I think that I might do a painting. I am working on understanding art worlds by looking at the self portraits of Frida Kahlo. I may want to make a self portrait similar to hers.
In this artwork I focused on the process of layering and how I would cut out the stars with an exacto knife. This artwork is a landscape of a minnesota forest, and at the right-hand side is a white two-story house. On the left is a patch of red flowers. To create the leaves on the treetop I smeared paint onto it and used an exacto knife to add a pine needle texture. To make the grass I... The reason I made this artwork was because I wanted to create a landscape with historical significance. The house is the last surviving structure of the once booming Crow Wing. I also wanted to make this artwork more experimental, trying out new things that I had never done before. My goal for this artwork was to try a slightly abstract and highly experimental artwork that was realistic and captured likelessnes. I think that if I were to do this artwork again it would look a lot better, but I was glad that I finished the artwork.
With this artwork I want to work especially on catching the likeness of the images I'm using for inspiration. Using my observational skills, I want to catch the likeness of the scene in a different medium. I also wanted to stretch and explore by experimenting with the look of certain techniques I wanted to try out. Firstly, I wanted to see what I would do with the pallet knife by cutting into wet paint. These cuts represent pine needles. I also added varnesh to the windows to give them a glossy effect.
Painting BootcampFor this artwork I knew that I wanted to use acrylic. I noticed the way that pine trees have bunches of pines that I thought I could replicate with paint. I experimented with adding a pine texture to the wet paint. The color scheme I went for was split complementary, as I hope to add red flowers for an accent. I wanted to do a painting of Crow Wing Park. The park is a ghost town, but this is the only and last thing standing from the once flourishing town. I wanted to capture this landscape in an impressionist style. I wanted to also work on adding form to the artwork.
Memento Mori: The Fall of man is a tempera painting based on the Latin composition style of Memento Mori, an artistic or symbolic reminder of the inevitability of death. The centerpiece of the artwork is the skull, with poetic symbols surrounding it. The skull has an open mouth, correlating the bite in the apple to the skull. To the right of the skull is an impressionist apple with an appealing scarlet glow and a bite taken out of it. To the left of the skull is a human bone. The entirety of the artwork was created 90% using pallet knives, giving the artwork it’s impressionist effect. The most realistic aspect is the skull, meant to draw in the viewer. The paintbrush was used sparingly and only for slight details. I used ink for the black background to experiment with different materials, as most of this artwork is an experiment.
The artwork’s intent is to express the symbolism of the Bible in reference to death and its connection to eternal death. In the story of Adam and Eve, humanity had separated itself from God, the giver of life, meaning that they would surely die. This combination of the Memento Mori reminding us of physical death and the spiritual story of eternal death is a warning to the viewer to consider their own life and to remind them of the separation from the Giver of Life Himself. My goals for this project were to create an artwork using pallet knives as a main tool and to experiment with different materials. Overall, I wish I added more objects and symbols to the artwork. I am generally quite pleased with how this artwork turned out. Dan Burgman in an American landscape artist who uses realism to depict nature scenes blending with cityscapes and other man-made things. In this artwork I depicted the bridge between nature and humanity by drawing Mesa Verde national park. This is a puebloan town that I felt inspired to create. I think that the change to nature at this abandoned town has changed it for the better, because now it is a lot easier to understand out history.
I think that a thinking drawing is a drawing in which the artist experiments with composition and other aspects. Thiebaud is known for this before he creates a painting by jotting down sketches before the artwork visualising movement, balance, repetition, composition, emphasis, variety, proportion, and unity. An example of this is in the artwork Row of Ties is the tie farthest off to the right is separated from the rest making the artwork look more interesting. It also creates balance in the artwork as the rest of the ties are slightly off to the left.
