My favorite artwork of the semester is simply called Self Portrait. This painting is my favorite because it looks the most realistic and I learned the most from it. I had experimented with layering in different colors and blending different colors. The artwork that I would like to re-do is the one titled "Crow Wing Mansion,"because the flowers in the artwork do not look right. I am still quite proud of the artwork and will continue to experiment with impressionist landscapes. With both of these artworks, I experimented with techniques I will likely use outside of art class. The use of layering, Impressionism, stencils, and blending are some of these. One thing I wish I could have done is done an artwork to the theme of taking a stand.

This artwork has a self portrait. I have painted myself looking directly at the viewer with a turquoise athletic shirt. The background is green, and I am wearing a red baseball hat that says "Enjoy Capitalism" To create this artwork I had layered complimentary colors to make them stand out and be solid. I also made sure to add a layer of red behind all of the sin to make it look more fleshy and alive. I also wanted to use a split complementary scheme, using the red-green and teal-peach color combination to made the colors pop. In order to make the red darker, I mixed in brown rather than black and I think that that makes the darkness effect more real. For the logos, I decided to create a stencil and spray it onto the the artwork, which I think worked out very well for the artwork. With this artwork, I wanted the big idea behind it to be similar to Frida Kahlo's portraits, and so I used subtle hints to reveal bits of my personality in the painting. The athletic shirt shows that I am a runner, and that the picture I used for reference was at a race I was doing. The background was inspired by the reference photo as well, as there was Minnesota wilderness in the background. The "Enjoy Capitalism" hat hints to my political leanings, which are conservative. I have especially been interested in politics this political season, and someday i'm considering being a diplomate. I am very proud of this artwork. If there is something I would change, I would want to mix up the color scheme to something more interesting. I am envisioning an artwork potentially about my German identity, or about my love of Spanish. I think that I might do a painting. I am working on understanding art worlds by looking at the self portraits of Frida Kahlo. I may want to make a self portrait similar to hers.
In this artwork I focused on the process of layering and how I would cut out the stars with an exacto knife. |
