I think that a thinking drawing is a drawing in which the artist experiments with composition and other aspects. Thiebaud is known for this before he creates a painting by jotting down sketches before the artwork visualising movement, balance, repetition, composition, emphasis, variety, proportion, and unity. An example of this is in the artwork Row of Ties is the tie farthest off to the right is separated from the rest making the artwork look more interesting. It also creates balance in the artwork as the rest of the ties are slightly off to the left.
